Card Sketch #9 | Cut That Pretty Paper & Create!

Cut that pretty paper and create! That is the theme today. Well actually it’s also about Card Sketch #9 and using our pretty patterned paper, cardstock and other items that I know we are all guilty of hoarding! I used some of the cards from the Reindeer Days Memories & More Card Pack to do this Christmas Card. I’ve very happy with how it turned out!

Getting Started

Card Challenge #9 was a bit tricky but I have some TIPS to help make it easier for you! There are a total of 11 strips cut at 1/2″ x 3-3/4. After I had cut all 11 strips, I wondered how in the heck they were all going to fit on my card base front (4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″). For beginners, cut your card base at 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ and score at 4-1/4″ for your fold. NOTE: I used my retired circle punch but I’ve included a substitute in the Product Table below.

I’ll be using the Simply Said Mix & Match and Greetings of the Season, both are photopolymer stamp set, for my sentiments. I love stamp sets that are ALL sentiments and so versatile. Simply Said (above) is very versatile and both have have two font styles and that’s a BONUS to me!

Greetings for the Season (above) is an Online Exclusive product. Check out it’s companion all-occasion stamp set Everyday Greetings when you visit my Online Store! I also used this holiday stamp set on other projects. Click HERE and HERE to those projects.

Basic Card

Start with a solid cardstock for your card base. Here I chose Basic White and it’s 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ and scored at 4-1/4″, which is the fold line. I also chose the retired Flowers For Every Season 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (2020-2021 AC) for my card. I include this information for those of you who have this paper hoarded away. Wink! Wink! But you can use ANY patterned paper for this layout! I LOVE the florals and it turned out very pretty.

I’ll admit, I was wondering how I would fit all these strips onto my card front! I realized that some of them would have to be popped up using Stampin’ Dimensionals. Using my favorite glue, Multipurpose Liquid Glue, I adhered the top and bottom strips down FIRST and popping up the strips #2, #4, #6, #8, and #10. To show you don’t have to have colored ink, I used Memento Tuxedo Black ink to stamp the sentiment label.

Useful TIPS!

TIP #1: Open up card base and lay flat before adhering the strips. This is helpful anytime you start adhering items to the front of your card bases.

TIP #2:  Lay the patterned paper strips in order of placement off to the right side of card base. I used 5 different patterned paper. Notice #1, #6, and #11 are the same pattern. #2 and #7 are the same pattern and so forth. I kept with the placement order #1 through #5 and started over at #6. I hope this helps!

TIP #3:  Turn over the strips that need dimensionals and apply them. After gluing down #1, pop up strip #2 just slightly covering the bottom edge of #1. Having #2 popped up allows you to tuck strip #3 just slightly underneath #2 and so on. NOTE: For my Christmas card, I popped up #1 and glued down #2 and so forth just to see how it would turn out.

TIP #4: Keep reading to see tutorial images below on how to adhere these 11 strips as well as the sentiment label.

Stepped Up Card

All I did to step up my card was to add some rhinestones. I used some leftover embellishments from my March 2022 Paper Pumpkin Kit BUT you could use Rhinestone Basic Jewels that I used on my Christmas card. See Below!

Rhinestone Basic Jewels has 3 sizes and 140 total adhesive-backed rhinestone pieces. I love using these to add a bit of sparkle when I can’t use my Clear Wink of Stella! You could attach a small ribbon/bow of some sort but I decided on embellishments. Notice I stamped the Merry Christmas sentiment in Garden Green. I love how I was able to decide on placement because the words are separate stamps. BTW, I used Real Red cardstock for my card base.

Tutorial Help

I hope these visuals are helpful! Not only notice how I used 2 strips of solid cardstock verses pattern paper but notice the top and bottom strips. They have a white border frame so I wanted one for the top and the bottom.

This step helped to keep me from messing up plus it helped to make adhering all these strips go more quickly! I popped on strip #1 then glued strip #2 and so forth. Below I cut strips of dimensionals from the sides of my sheet of dimensionals and placed them onto the glue downed area where the sentiment label will be placed. I also add just a bit of liquid glue to the back of my label here it will lay on the popped up strips.

Reindeer Days Memories & More Card Pack

I didn’t do an Avid card layout, which would’ve had embellishments and heat embossed sentiment on the label. Life got in the way a bit but here is a camera shot of some of the cards in this pack! There are 2 different sizes, which I love! Notice how these cards are used in the Memories & More pages in the below image.
